OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College freshman guard Layla Scott and sophomore gaurd Taliyah Scott have been named All-America by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Layla was selected to the first-team, Taliyah was a second-team selection.
The sisters from Independence, Missouri helped lead the Cavaliers to the NJCAA Division II National Championship this season, finishing the year 34-1 to tie the best season mark in program history. They also helped lead the team to an undefeated regular season (30-0) and win the Kansas Jayhawk Conference Division II Championship.
Layla, a freshman, was selected the MVP of the national tournament, finishing with 67 points, an average of 16.8 per game. Her 67 points rank as the fourth most for a JCCC player in tournament play. She also made 12 3-point field goals, eighth most in tournament play. In the national championship game, Layla led JCCC with 25 points, the most scored in a national championship game in program history.
For the season, Layla led the team and ranked second in the conference averaging 16.3 points per game. She led the conference and ranked third in the NJCAA with 115 made 3-point baskets. That total ranks second all-time in team history and seventh in conference history. She also ranked second in the conference and 23rd nationally in 3-point field goal accuracy at 37 percent. Her 571 total points scored rank second and 19th respectively in the KJCCC and NJCAA, and rank 10th on Johnson County's season chart. Layla also averaged 3.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.0 seals over the season
Layla was the team's leading scorer in 22 games, tying for seventh all-time at JCCC. She also led the team with 29 games reaching double figures in points, which ties for ninth in team history. Layla reached 20+ points nine times, highlighted by a season high 30 against cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas on February 8.
Taiyah, a sophomore, was also named All-America by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association earlier this year. She averaged 7.9 points, 6.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds. She upped her scoring average to 8.8 in conference play. Taliyah scored in double figures in 10 games and reached double figures in assists three times, the fourth-most recorded in a season in team history.
Taliyah led the conference and ranked third in the NJCAA with 211 assists. That total ranks her third on JCCC's all-time season chart. She also ranked third in the conference and tied for 31st in the NJCAA with a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio.
For her career, Taliyah was part of the greatest two-year runs in program history, helping JCCC to a record of 68-2, two conference titles, two NJCAA D-II Tournament appearances, a national runner-up finish in 2024 and a national title this year. She finished her career with 387 assists, the second-most all-time in team history. She averaged 9.3 points, 5.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals over 70 career games.
Both players were named All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference and All-Region 6 Division II performers. Layla was a first-team selection and voted the Freshman of the Year.
