OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Leading Johnson County to a conference series sweep of Neosho County with three run-rule victories, Cavalier catcher Miken Miller and pitcher Sam Novonty earned Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week accolades for week 11.
Miller had a big week at the plate for the Cavaliers batting 533 (8-for-15) with two triples, three home runs, eight runs scored and 12 RBI. He opened the series with a triple, a home run, three runs scored and five RBI in a 19-4 victory. He again produced a triple and home run to drive in three in an 11-0 shutout in the second game. Miller capped the series with three hits, including a homer, and four RBI in a 16-6 win. For the season he is batting .380 (54-for-143) with 16 doubles, three triples, five home runs 36 runs and 44 RBI. His 16 doubles lead the conference and his 54 hits and 42 RBI rank third. He ranks second with 24 total extra base hits.
Novonty hurled seven innings of shutout ball to earn a complete-game 11-0 victory at Neosho County in the second game of the series. The right-hander scattered four hits and struck out eight batters, his second-highest game total of the season. Novotny now stands 7-1 on the season with 51 strikeouts. His seven victories tie for the most in the KJCCC while ranking fifth in strikeouts.
