OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County's pitching staff combined to strikeout 24 batters while allowing just five earned runs, to help the No. 6-ranked Cavaliers take to the first two games of a four-game series with Neosho County. The two wins up JCCC's season mark to an amazing 33-1, and 17-1 in conference play.
In a 5-3 win in game one, sophomore right-hander Matt Ronnebaum struck out eight batters in 4.2 innings, and sophomore left-hander CC Crain closed out the final 2.1 innings mowing down five batters to earn the victory and up his season mark to 3-0.
Jake Grauberger and Wyatt Morgan each had a single and an extra base to plate home a run, and Alex Austin belted a solo home run to power the Cavaliers offense.
In the second game, a 6-4 victory, left-hander Max Chapman, right-hander Paul Rector and right-hander Danny Trehey combined for 11 strikeouts and three earned runs. Chapman pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, with six strikeouts.
Rector logged the next 2.2 innings, allowing a run off three hits with two strikeouts. He was the winning pitcher, improving to 3-0 on the season.
Trehey closed out the final two innings, allowing one hit and a run with three strikeouts to pick up his seventh save, which has him tied for fourth in the NJCAA.
At the plate, JCCC hitter collected seven extra base hits, including a home run off the bat of Nick Iannantone.
The two teams will conclude the series on Monday in Chanute, Kan.
