OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College freshman left-handed pitcher Jay Long (Blue Valley HS/Stilwell, Kan.) has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue his baseball career at Southeastern Louisiana University coached by Matt Riser. Under Riser's leadership Southeastern has become one of the Southland Conference's premier teams, earning three NCAA Tournament berths and a pair of Southland Conference titles since 2014. Long will join the Lions'program in the fall of 2021.
Long came to JCCC ranked as the No. 3 left-handed pitcher in Kansas and No. 23 overall prospect in the state according to Perfect Game.
In last spring's shortened season due to COVID-19, Long was selected honorable mention All-American by JUCO Baseball Blog last spring after making seven relief appearances for the Cavaliers. He was 1-0 with a save and an earned run average of 1.31. He also stuck out 34 batters in just 20.2 innings of work. Long allowed just five runs, three earned, and six walks. His five runs allowed tie the fourth fewest allowed in a season at JCCC, and his three earned runs tie for eighth in a season.
Long is also an outstanding student, earning JCCC student-athlete academic honors in the fall 2019 semester, and NJCAA All-Academic second-team honors in the spring 2020 with a grade point average between 3.80-3.99.
At Blue Valley High School Long was a two-year starter for coach Tony Scardino. As a senior, Long earned first-team Kansas 6A All-State by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches. He also earned first-team All-State by Sports in Kansas. He earned honorable mention All-State as a junior. Long was also a two-time All-Eastern Kansas League selection, earning first-team as a senior and second-team his junior year.
In his two seasons for the Tigers, Long posted a 10-2 record with 108 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched. In 2018, he was the starter and winning pitcher for Blue Valley's 1-0 win over Blue Valley Northwest in the 6A State Championship game.
