JCCC’s championship hopes kept alive with at-large bid

The photo shows a posed team picture of a soccer squad outdoors on a grassy area in front of a light-colored wall. The group consists of three rows of players wearing uniforms. Most of the players are dressed in light blue jerseys with the word “Cavaliers” printed across the chest, paired with white shorts and white socks. Two players, positioned on the far left and far right in the front row, are wearing black jerseys and holding soccer balls.
The players are arranged in a structured formation: the front row kneeling, the middle row sitting or crouching slightly, and the back row standing. The lighting is bright and natural, suggesting the photo was taken during the day. The overall setting and composition indicate this is an official team photo, likely for a college or school soccer program.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College women's soccer team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II national tournament, after receiving an at-large bid Tuesday.  The tournament will take place November 16-22 at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan.

This  marks Johnson County's fourth trip to nationals, and its third straight in Division II. The Cavaliers previously qualified for the Division I Tournament in 2009, and the D-II tournaments in 2023 and 2024 - all under the direction of head coach Jim Schwab- finishing runner-up in each of those seasons.

Ranked No. 1 in the final NJCAA D-II Poll, JCCC fell to Iowa Lakes Community College in penalty kicks in the NJCAA North Plains District Championship on Friday. However, the Cavaliers' dominant season résumé earned them not only an at-large berth, but also the tournament's No. 1 overall seed.

"This group earned everything that's come their way this season," head coach Jim Schwab said. "They've shown consistency, grit and a championship mindset from day one. Getting the at-large bid is a tremendous honor, but our work is far from finished. Our goals has always been to play our best soccer in November, and this team is locked in and hungry to take the next step. We're excited for the opportunity and ready to compete in Wichita."

Johnson County (20-0-1) was placed in the Pool A bracket with No. 8 seed Jones College (12-5-2) and No. 12 seed University of Arkansas Cossatot (5-6-1). Jones also received an-large bid after falling to defending national champion Northwest Mississippi in the Gulf South District Championship. Arkansas Costatot punched its ticket by upsetting No. 9-ranked St. Charles 3-2 to capture the Central District title.
