No. 11 JCCC softball drops doubleheader to No. 4 Kirkwood

The image shows a scene on a softball field with two softball players standing together in the foreground. Both players are wearing matching dark-colored uniforms with vertical pinstripes. The word “CAVALIERS” is printed across the upper back of each uniform top. Each player is holding a softball glove—one holding the glove down at their side, and the other holding the glove behind their back. Both are standing on a reddish-brown turf infield near what appears to be the edge of the pitching circle or baselines.
In the background, more players are visible standing along a fence line. They are wearing bright yellow pants with white socks and shoes; some are also wearing blue tops. A few individuals appear to be seated or crouched near equipment, such as buckets. The setting appears to be a sunny day given the strong shadows and bright lighting.
The field surface is a combination of red turf for the infield and green turf for foul territory or outfield edge. A white base is partially visible on the left side of the image. The overall context suggests a pregame or in-game pause, with players waiting or preparing for action.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – In a showdown between two nationally ranked NJCAA Division II softball programs, No. 11 Johnson County dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 4 Kirkwood, falling 2-1 in the opener and 18-12 in the nightcap.

In game one, both teams were strong in the circle, but Kirkwood managed just enough offense to claim the one-run victory.

Kyleigh Whitehurst got the start for the Cavaliers. The freshman right-hander allowed five hits and two unearned runs over seven innings while striking out eight. Kirkwood starter Libby Trewin was equally effective, surrendering four hits and one unearned run over seven innings while striking out nine JCCC batters.

Reese Pattison drove in Johnson County's lone run. Mariah Herrera, Katie Courter, Reagan Nietzel and Kennedy Glassford each recorded one hit.

JCCC scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alaryce Millard reached second base on an error by the Kirkwood left fielder, moved to third on Courter's sacrifice, and scored on Pattison's groundout to shortstop.

The second game turned into an offensive showcase for both teams. The Cavaliers jumped out early with five runs in the first inning and added four more in the fourth on Pattison's grand slam. However, two big innings by Kirkwood proved too much for Johnson County to overcome. The Eagles scored seven runs in the third inning and sealed the win with six runs in the seventh to stretch a one-run lead into a seven-run advantage.

Pattison added an RBI single to finish with five RBI in the game. Courter led the Cavaliers with three hits, while Nietzel and Mackenzie Yoder each drove in two runs.

Ally Gorsh paced the Eagles' offense with four hits and five RBI. Shannon Finn added four hits and scored three runs, while Breckin De La Rosa and Kinsley Theobald each collected three hits and four RBI for Kirkwood, which extended its winning streak to 17 games.
