OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The No. 21-ranked Johnson County Community College softball team (30-15) will begin its quest to qualify for the 2025 NJCAA Division II Softball World Series when they host Fort Scott Community College (17-21) Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. JCCC is the third in the tournament and Fort Scott is the No. 6 seed. The No. 1 seed is Cowley.
The Cavaliers will be looking to avenge a pair of losses to the Greyhounds in last year's Region 6 Tournament, including an 11-9 loss in the championship game.
Johnson County enters the tournament after finishing in a tie for third place in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division II standings. The Cavaliers are batting .404 with 477 hits, 136 doubles, 12 triples, 61 home runs, 348 runs, 71 stolen bases and 341 RBI. JCCC's three pitchers have combined for a 3.26 ERA and 235 strikeouts.
The Greyhounds finished sixth in the conference standings. The Greyhounds are batting .272 with 287 hits, 55 doubles, eight triples, 11 home runs, 65 steals and 372 RBI. Their pitching staff has an ERA of 7.76 with 153 strikeouts.
Johnson County is led by head coach Aubree Brattin-Volkens, who is coaching in her 14th season with the program. She stands 447-169 (.726). Brattin-Volkens has won five conference titles, four region/district titles and had five teams reach the NJCAA D-II Softball World Series, with one third-place finish, three fifth-place finishes and one seventh-place finish. Brattin-Volkens has coached a total of 10 NJCAA All-American highlighted by Aspen Burgardt being selected the NJCAA D-II National Player of the Year last season, a first in program history.
Fort Scott is coached Kae Lani Bryan who is in her seventh season at the helm, leading the Greyhounds to a 122-170 record. She is the program's all-time wins leader. Last year she led her team to the Region 6 D-II title and a berth in the NJCAA D-II World Series, the first in program history. Fort Scott finished 1-2 in the tournament and tied for 15th place. She also coached the first player to be selected All-America in program history last season.
