OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – After dropping three of four games to open the month of April, the No. 14-ranked Johnson County softball team got back on track with a double header sweep over Independence on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Cavaliers opened with a 5-1 victory, then completed the sweep by holding off the Pirates, 4-3.
In the opener, sophomore first baseman AJ Elleman led the offense going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
Catcher Gaige Pinkerton collected two singles, a walk and scored three times. Right fielder Katie Enneking and pitcher Kaylin Watkins each drove in a run.
Watkins also put up a solid effort in the circle. She allowed just one run off five hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings to earn a complete-game victory.
In the second game, the Lady Cavaliers built a 4-0 lead after five innings, but they allowed Independence back into the game with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Elleman again had the big bat with a two-run double. Enneking and Jordan Diehl each drove in a run as well.
Jordan Harrison earned the complete-game victory. She allowed three runs over seven hits with seven strikeouts.
With the two wins, Johnson County improved to 17-9 overall and to 11-3 in KJCCC Division A standings. JCCC travels across town to take on No. 15 Kansas City Kansas on Saturday, April 9. The Blue Devils are in second place in the standing at 7-3 in conference play, and 24-6 overall.
