OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 10-ranked Johnson County softball team swept a pair of double headers against over the weekend to extend their conference win streak to eight straight and remain unbeaten in conference play.
The Lady Cavaliers downed Labette on Friday, March 25 by the scores of 6-4 and 11-7. The next day they produced a 10-0 shutout and a 14-4 victory over the Thunderbirds.
In the opener against Labette, sophomore Nyah Brown belted a 3-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to give JCCC a two-run advantage. Over the four games, Brown was JCCC's top hitter batting .500 (6-for-12) with a two extra base hits, seven runs scored and seven driving in.
Freshman pitcher Jordan Harrison earned the victory and improved to 4-1 in the season. She allowed four runs of four hits, three earned, and struck out five in the complete-game victory.
In the second game, Labette jumped out to a big lead plating four runs in the top of the first and led 6-0 after the fourth inning. Johnson County pulled even in the bottom of the inning with six runs and took the lead for good with five in the bottom of the fifth.
Sophomore outfielder Jordan Diehl had the big blow with a three-run shot in the fifth inning. She had an RBI the fourth.
Sophomore pitcher AJ Elleman earned the complete game victory and improved to 5-1. Only three of the seven runs Labette scored were earned. She also struck out six batters.
In the series opener against Cloud County, Brown and Harrison each drove in three runs and sophomore outfielder Katie Enneking plated two runs.
Freshman second baseman Toree Hoobler stole three bases and scored three times.
Sophomore Kaylin Watkins did not allow a hit and struck out four in her four innings of work, and now stands 3-0 on the season in the circle.
Freshman Myel White pitched a scoreless inning in relief to close out the game.
In the final game of the weekend, Hoobler drove in four runs and scored three times, and White and freshman catcher Gaige Pinkerton each had two RBI. Diehl and Brown each scored three times as well.
Sophomore Morgan Lindsay picked up her first win of the season going the distance. She allowed four runs, two earned, and struck out two.
The Lady Cavaliers (14-6/8-0). will face two more conference opponents this week. They host Neosho County on Thursday, March 31, and travel to No. 16 Highland on Saturday for a twin bill. Highland is in first place in the KJCCC D-II/Div. B standings with a record of 17-3 and 8-0.
