OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 10th-ranked Johnson County softball team opened its 2022 campaign with a sweep over Marshalltown on February 27, and a series split with North Central Missouri on March 1.
The Lady Cavaliers opened with a 4-3 win over the Tigers, followed by an 8-0 victory in the second game.
Sophomore outfielder Katie Enneking went 4-for-6 with two runs, a home run, two walks and two RBI in a double header sweep over Marshalltown.
Freshman Maddy Morrison had two hits and three RBI in the second game, and All-American first baseman Kaylin Watkins belted a two-run home run.
Johnson County right-hand pitcher AJ Elleman picked up two victories agains the Tigers. In the opener she pitched the final 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. She followed with a complete game shutout. She scattered five hits and struck out two over six innings. For her efforts, Elleman was named the KJCCC D-II Softball Pitcher of the Week.
In the two-game series against North Central Missouri, JCCC opened with a 4-3 setback. Enneking had a single, double and scored twice, and Watkins ripped two double and drove in all three runs.
Johnson County rebounded with an 11-3 five inning victory over the Pirates. Enneking continued to swing a hot bat, collected a double, triple, two runs scored and four driven in.
Freshman infielder Nyah Brown belted a three-run homer. Freshman infielder Myel White had a double and a solo homer run and scored twice, and Watkins collected two RBI.
Right-hander Jordan Harrison picked up her first victory on the season. She allowed three runs on four hits, walked four and struck out seven in five innings in the circle.
Johnson County will host two more series this week. They take on Iowa Central on Thursday, March 3 at 2 and 4 p.m., and No. 4-ranked Kirkwood comes to town on Friday, March 4 for doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
